Advantages of a Virtual Private Server

March 12, 2011

A question often asked by RackNine’s clients is what are the differences between Dedicated Servers, Virtual Private Servers and Shared Web Hosting. In this article we will focus on the advantages of a Virtual Private Server, as the perfect solution between the exclusive services provided by Dedicated Servers and those of the highly popular Shared Hosting plans.

A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is basically a virtual machine for use exclusively by an individual service. Virtual in this context means that it is a software implementation of a computer that executes programs as if it were the real thing, that is, a real physical machine. A computer within a computer, sharing hardware resources with other virtual computers, whose functionally is roughly equivalent to a separate physical computer. Each of those virtual machines is dedicated to each individual customer’s needs and can be configured to run as a server computer running its own server software capable of running its own operating system and can be rebooted independently without affecting other virtual servers sharing the same hardware resources.

Virtual Private Servers bridge the gap between the limitations of shared web hosting and costly dedicated hosting services, giving customers the kind of features you’d expect in a physical dedicated server at a much lower cost. As a VPS runs its own copy of its operating system, customers have administrator access to that operating system instance and can install almost any software that runs on that particular OS.

By default RackNine’s Virtual Private Servers run in the Cloud, effectively dedicating CPU, RAM memory, and disk space to a single operating system instance, that thanks to the scalability nature of Cloud Computing, is guaranteed to meet future requirements, something that cannot be done with Shared Web Hosting, and still significantly less expensive than Dedicated Servers. With a RackNine® Virtual Private Server, your RAM and storage are guaranteed, because we never overload.

We create physical partitions in the storage systems of our servers in such a way that each virtual machine operates almost entirely independently of the other virtual machines, which allows for consistent performance and high bandwidth. All in all, a Virtual Private Server is our recommended solution for small businesses that need special features such as SSH (Root access for server-level customization), dedicated IP addresses, scalability in both bandwidth and hardware resources or other advanced features such as e-commerce database customization and security deterrents, that are usually reserved for Dedicated Servers.

If you are not sure how to set your Virtual Private Server up, our experts will help get you get it up and running fast. You just need to choose the plan that’s right for you, customize your bandwidth and select your control panel of choice among any of the following: Parallels® Plesk Panel, Cpanel® or Parallels® Small Business Panel*. All of them very easy to administer and if you require it, we’ll guide you through its configuration.
